I’m just an old stump, she said. And the boy replied, I don’t need very much now, maybe just a quiet place to sit and rest.

Well then, the tree said, come sit and rest. Stumps are good for sitting on and resting. And the boy did. And the tree was happy.

But the tree is dead now! Huk cried out. She can’t grow back a trunk and branches and apples…

Yes, the tree is dead now, said Tuk. That’s why it’s a very sad story, I think. And it’s a tale about how the boy took the tree and her love for him for granted.

The fire in Huk’s fireplace was slowly going out, and Huk and Tuk were feeling very sad together.

Then Tuk said, It’s like when we just take the world for granted and use up everything the Earth gives us and think little of it because we figure that’s what the Earth is for. Just like the boy thought the tree was there to give him want he wanted and needed. It’s about time we opened our eyes wide and made some real choices about how we treat the world instead.

When we all still had tails that connected us, Huk said, nobody acted the way that boy did. We felt connected to everything and we made decisions with our eyes wide open about how to treat the Earth, because we realized our choices affected others too.

And the tree can’t give anymore when she’s dead, Huk said, no matter how much she loves the boy.

I know, said Tuk, that’s why this is such a sad tale.
